10. FAMU Marching Band Hazing Incident
College hazing is almost inevitable inside fraternities, sororities, college sports teams, college groups, etc. It’s a way to “break in” new members as an initiation. Sadly, college hazing can be taken much too far. Robert Champion was a member of the Florida A&M marching band who had just earned a spot as a drum major. To prove his worthiness, Champion volunteered to run the Marching 100 band’s hazing ritual called “Crossing Bus C.” This ritual forced a new band member to run from the front of the bus to the back. In the process, the older band members maliciously beat the new band member with instruments. Champion suffered fatal injuries from the hazing incident and 12 band members were arrested for his death.
